The purpose of insurance is to provide you and your client with maximum protection while you are acting in your professional capacity.
Professional Indemnity insurance gives you protection against any bodily or mental injury, illness, disease or death of a client caused by any negligent act, error or omission committed by you in or about the conduct of your professional duties.
Public Liability insures you against loss or damage to clients (and others) due to an unsafe environment e.g. slippery floors, faulty equipment etc.
Products Liability covers you for claims that a product that you provided caused harm, like an injury caused by therapy equipment. Please refer to our fact sheet on Therapeutic Devices and Massage Tools for further information on managing your liability.
All new applicants who wish to gain provider recognition with ARHG, Australian Unity, BUPA, HCF and NIB will need to hold at least $2 million dollars' professional indemnity and 10 million dollars’ public liability insurance per claim (i.e. this means each and every claim, not claims in the aggregate).

Students are only covered for techniques and material they have been taught at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Students must always identify their student status to the client. This may be in the form of a letter that the client signs e.g. 'I understand that I am receiving Massage Therapy from a Student Therapist'.
Please contact the insurance broker/authorised representative directly if you have further policy questions.
If you are operating your practice from home, you need to make sure you have declared this to your home and contents insurance policy provider or you risk voiding your home insurance. Home and contents insurance is a separate cover to your professional indemnity and public liability cover, however some insurance companies do offer combined policies that cover everything.
AMT does not have any kind of preferred provider arrangements with home and contents insurance providers so we cannot make a specific recommendation in this area. Your current home and contents provider may cover home-based businesses so you just need to make sure you have disclosed the business activity to them.
There are many companies that offer cover that includes home-based business. Here are some links to get you started.
If you are running a business from a rental property, you will need to make sure that your landlord has been notified of the business and has, in turn, noted the business activity in their landlord's insurance policy.
